Russian Dolls: Just When You Think You Heard Everything!

Just when you think you have heard everything in the realm of the absurd, something else comes along.  Today it's the news tweeted by Michael Levitis that Marina and Eva are in negotiations over a Russian talk show!  Yes you heard me right and he is asking for opinions, but I do hesitate to tweet him mine.  However, I will gladly pour my heart out here on the blog.

First of all it should be in Russian for a Russian audience.  Eva's accent is a little too thick for the average American listener to understand everything she says.  Marina's voice is too shrilly and high pitched in any language not to drive people away.  I have to wonder whose bright idea this is, if in fact it's true.  Some times i think these cast members throw stuff out there on the internet to see if it will "stick."  Like Eddie did a couple of days ago when he said another network had picked up the show for a second season.  I really have trouble believing Eva and Marina were made any kind of offer for a talk show.  I think they are just saying that so maybe some producer will think it's a good idea.  It's not.

Russian Dolls: Recap Episode 7 “Cold Wars”

This episode opens with Diana and Anastasia at the tanning salon with Diana saying how good she has to look and how she gets her nails done every week. She thinks a “tanner” person looks better, but did she ever look into the risks of tanning? You know “skin cancer?” But, she thinks it looks “healthier to be bronze. She thinks people judge you on your looks, but maybe not everyone is as shallow as she thinks and she looks fine the way she is. Then she adds she is thinking of doing a tattoo lip liner! She realizes it’s permanent. And when she finds out the tattoo artist lives right next door, how can she not go? Well how about if 5 or ten years from now she regrets doing it or what if it doesn’t come out the way she envisions it? Diana actually says she is doing this to get a rich guy! And surprisingly, Anastasia voices common sense and tells her a Russian guy doesn’t just want someone who looks good, but someone who can take care of him and has a brain.

Marina’s House, my favorite place to be (insert sarcasm here). Marina, Michael and Eva are talking and Eva tells them it is going to be the 20th anniversary of her father’s death. Eva says her brother and uncle will be going with her to the cemetery on the anniversary of his death and Michael says, yes they will all go. To which Marina immediately says, she doesn’t think she should go because she never even met the man! Michael tells her that is disrespectful. Eva says why she doesn’t know him and isn’t related to him. This woman has no idea at all of what it means to be respectful. She should keep her mouth shut and someone should explain to her that it is to show respect to her husband and mother in-law to attend as a family! She didn’t know the fashion designers, but she went to many parties during NY Fashion Week! And on top of that she doesn’t think her 12 year old son, Zev, should go either. She thinks he is too young to visit a cemetery. Michael and Eva disagree. It’s about showing respect to his great grandfather and Michael says it’s for him to learn to appreciate where he came from. Oh brother, she goes on to say that as his mother her job is to protect him from extra stress. And as Eva and Michael point out, it’s normal to have some stress in life and he needs to be prepared for that. Eva thinks Zev should learn about the history and suffering of his father’s side of the family. Marina, as usual, is being totally unreasonable. Eva is reduced to tears and Michael sees his mother’s pain. Eva is hurt and asks Marina if she can change her decision. Marina says it’s how she feels and as usual, Michael doesn’t stand up to her as the man of the house. He is the father and yet has no say. And, if I heard correctly, Zev is named after Eva’s father, all the more reason for him to go!

Anastasia and Diana’s apartment up next! What a joke! Tatiana, the tattoo artist, lives in apartment 7A and the girls live in apartment 7B! And Diana is just now learning that she is her neighbor and lives about three feet away? Diana explains she wants a lip liner and Tatiana explains the procedure step by step to her, making sure she knows lips are more sensitive. The discussion of the different size needles makes Diana freak out, but does common sense kick in and make her leave? After thinking about it a few minutes she decides to go through with it. But not now!

Does Marina look HOT?

Marina’s House again, oh brother. Michael tells her his mother is upset and guess what Marina answers, “I don’t care about your mother being upset, this is about ME being upset! You better care about me being upset, OK!” He says ok and pathetically walks away. Come on Michael, stand up to Marina, you let her bully you all the time! Marina says that she doesn’t want to traumatize her children, that’s it. Michael tells her she is blowing the whole thing out of proportion, which is true. He tries to explain to her that a cemetery is a place to reflect and remember the person, there are no dead bodies. But finally he says he is not going to fight with her over it. And, she also refuses to go.

Michael and Marina are at the furrier looking at coats. She says, it’s his job to buy her nice things, to pay her bills, and to give her a good life. But God forbid he gets any say in what goes on in the household? We see Marina trying on various items and Michael actually says one coat “looks hot on her.” (I am dying laughing right now.) Michael wants to get her a nice coat so she will change her mind about the cemetery. Marina was already on to him. Marina says there is no fur coat in the world that is going to make her change her mind. Ugh! Michael says he will respect her wishes. She puts on a $20,000 coat and he tells her it looks stunning…I think Michael needs an eye exam.

Back to Anastasia and Diana’s apartment. Diana’s parents stop by, isn’t that nice? She invited them over because she wants to hear their opinion about the lip liner tattoo. Really? She already knows what they are going to say and so do I and I never met them. Immediately they both say “NO” when she bounces the idea off them. Perfect. She explains why she has to have this procedure done. Every day she has to put on lip liner and every day it’s annoying…gee how lazy can you get? And she seems to think this will help her find a man in the future. Come on, is this the best the writers can do??? Please!Diana’s father is upset because she has always placed too much emphasis on her looks.

Damn, back to Marina’s house! Michael goes to talk to Zev. He plans to smuggle him out to the cemetery. He explains to his son that the family is going to the cemetery and why. He asks him if he wants to go. Zev answers, what is mom going to say about it? They get ready to go while Marina is out with her daughter. At the cemetery the family leaves rocks on the tombstone and prayers are said. Eva feels it is very important for Zev to have this experience, it‘s Russian culture. Michael wants his son to toughen up and also to know about the strong man his grandfather was. Then Michael tells his mother, you know Marina is going to kill me for this.

Eddie and Albert chat and Eddie says that Russian women go out of their way to make themselves something that they are not. Yet Eddie is forever trying to become the next Situation from Jersey Shore! Maybe that analogy with sink in with him?

What do you think?

At Anastasia and Diana’s place, Diana takes one last look at her natural lips. It looks like she might change her mind when considering what her parents said, however the show must go on and they need drama, so off to Tatiana’s we go. After applying tape to Diana’s lips, and not very neatly I might add, Tatiana takes out the needles and gets to work. Diana is screaming, presumably from the pain, if she is actually going through with it. She seems to be bleeding and saying OMG. We get a peek at it, I don’t like it. Then Anastasia says Diana is going to see her parents later that day. Why? Diana loves it as she looks in the mirror. I guess that’s all that counts. Seriously, I think it’s a mess.

Diana’s parents home. She tells them she had it done and they both think it looks ugly. After telling her how much they hate it her father asks her where she got the money to do it. She says she saved up. He is concerned about the way she spends money. Her father asks if it was an investment? Being sarcastic. She answers yes now she doesn’t have to buy as many pencils.

Marina’s home. Marina walks in and asks what they did all day. Michael says we’ll talk about it have a seat. Michael tells her he took Zev to the cemetery. Marina looks like she is having a convulsion! Michael says they wanted to respect her wishes but her wishes made no sense. Zev says he is leaving when the screaming starts. She yells they he took her child against her wishes and Michael finally answers, he is my child also. Then she explains how her vote is always above his vote, she is the mother. And it ends with Marina and Michael arguing and Eva leaving the house.

Russian Dolls: Eva Levitis On X Factor!

The beautiful Eva Levitis, star of Russian Dolls, has auditioned for X Factor.  A very bold move for Eva, especially since she decided to take on a hit of Lady Gaga's, "Bad Romance."   It's a brief clip, but it appears that the judges were not all that impressed.  Simon Cowell is heard to say, "That was like running over 25 cats on the Freeway!"  Well you can't please everyone and I do not always agree with Simon!

Below is her commercial and she says she was chosen out of 20,000 people who auditioned for the show to appear in it.  The show will air September 21 and 22 and we may get to see her entire performance then!  Not only is she the "Snooki" of Russian Dolls, she is turning into the Lady Gaga of Pop Music!

Eva we love your spirit and the way you pursue your dreams with passion!  I hope your family and friends (minus Marina) support you 100%!  You go girl!

Russian Dolls: Hurricane Irene Attacks Dolls

Woe is Brighton Beach and the Russian Dolls!  The Brighton beach Jubilee has been cancelled for this weekend thank to Hurricane Irene!  Officials decided that it would be too dangerous to go ahead with plans this weekend.  The event is being rescheduled for mid September.

Meanwhile our Russian Dolls are being driven out of Brighton Beach due to the mandatory evacuations.  We got word that some of them are ok and carrying on with their usual shopping sprees despite the bad weather.  Last night Marina got her done as well as a mani, pedi for Michael's birthday.  She says, "I can't believe the stupid hurricane had to happen this weekend!"  This morning they were leaving the city as they are in zone A and must evacuate.   They took two cars.

They stopped at Woodbury Commons on the way to the hotel to do some shopping.  Eva bought a fur Russian Hat for winter.  Then they had a change of plans and decided to go to the Poconos, because the kids would have a better time there. they arrived safely minutes ago.  Eva summed up the whole experience by saying, "Irene I am not your friend, I ran away from you."

How are the other dolls?  You'll have to check back and see if we get word!  Until then, everyone be safe!

Russian Dolls: Marina Calls Eva "Snooki"

Hollywood Life interviews Marina and once again she can be counted on again to insult her mother-in-law, Eva, calling her the "Snooki" of the show.  Why?  Because Eva has young ideas, and why shouldn't she, she is only 56 years old!  Marina thinks she and Eva have a good relationship overall, but she feels that Eva is single "and becoming a child."  All this because Eva wants to date younger guys and have fun.  I don't think that is unreasonable.  She says the younger kids are more reserved and aware of the cameras, while Eva is "just all out there...she goes out on dates, she goes to matchmaker looking for sexual relationships and I have to tell her ok break break, you gotta stop."  She says she was embarrassed by Eva's outfits for the pageant because her children were there, her 13 year old son, and she doesn't want them to be embarrased.  But frankly, I saw nothing offensive or embarrassing in the way Eva dressed.  Marina feels she is the one who needs to speak up because her husband and his sister can't say anything because it's their mother, so it's up to her to speak up.  Marina feels their is a role reversal in this situation where she is really parenting Eva.  Watch the whole interview below.

Meanwhile, am I the only one who finds Marina's very high pitched voice annoying to listen too?

Russian Dolls: Adorable Eva & ChanceTV

At the premiere party for the launching of Russian Dolls, Eva Levitis was interviewed by ChanceTV.

It was a pleasure to watch her interview.  It's is hard to believe that Eva is a grandmother!  Eva is very young at heart and might even be looking for a younger man who can keep up with her.  She is getting to live out her lifelong dream of performing, because of this show, and she couldn't be happier about it.  She looks adorable.  I am very happy for her and I hope she ignores Marina's comments and follows what she knows in heart is good for herself.  She is trully the star of Russian Dolls!

P.S.  Eva even offered to give Chance some belly dancing lessons!

Russian Dolls: Eva's Belly Dancing Routine

Eva Levitis has always wanted to be a performer on stage.  She was an engineer in Russia.  But now, many years later, she is a grandmother who has the opportunity to fulfill her dream.  A Grandmother Pageant is being held, with a talent contest, and Eva enters.  Her talent is belly dancing.  Here, in this clip, she demonstrates her routine and skill for her family: Michael, Marina and her grandson.  I think she is adorable.  Still, every other few seconds, Marina is insulting her mother-in-law and worries only about her "embarrassment."  It is really ashame how poorly Marina comes off and she sets a bad example for her son.  It's Russian tradition to respect your parents and your elders, however Marina does not adhere to that where her mother-in-law is concerned.  If you have watched the first episode on Thursday night, I'm sure you will agree.  If not, just watch the short clip below, and give us your thoughts.  I would love to know what you think about this.  I also wonder how marina would feel if Michael treated HER mother the way she treats his.  It's really appalling!

Russian Dolls: Episode 1 “Mama Dearest” - Recap and Review

These are the only Russian Dolls I want to see right now!

I was looking forward to watching Russian Dolls, despite the bad reviews that it got from various newspapers, and it got plenty. I am sorry to have to say that the reviews all hit the nail on the head, in my opinion. If you missed the show, this is what happened and my review follows.

The episode opens with Marina complaining about her mother-in-law’s, Eva’s, “Grandma Pageant” and she pretty much does that for the entire show. She says, “I have no choice, but to go.” “Why do I have to waste my whole Sunday? It’s just a stupid, local Brighten Beach pageant!” she says. Renata disagrees, she thinks Eva can be anything she wants to be and if she sees herself as young and adorable, that’s what she is. The other woman, says that Marina thinks “she is the centerpiece of the universe and everyone should revolve around her.” Marina says of Eva, “she is just her husband’s mother, she’s nobody to me.” Then Marina talks about how the Russian culture teaches you to respect your parents.

There is a lot of skipping around to different cast members throughout the episode, maybe it’s the creator’s way of introducing us to all of them, but I found it to be a bit choppy. . We meet Diana, who is 23, but came to this country as a young girl. She is dating Paul, who is Spanish. In the Russian culture it is a big deal to date a non-Russian. The next scene is at the Russian bathhouse when Russians apparently go to relax, get together with friends and hang out in their bathing suits. There are a few shots of the younger cast members playing in the pool while the older members are at a table watching.

Anna says there are no decent guys out there. Anna is a model and has her own modeling school. She wants to be married at around 33 years old and freeze her eggs for later use. Anastasia, Diana’s friend and roommate, is not ready for kids. Eddie makes a wise crack to Albert, “Russian girls like to flirt, but never give it up.”

Eva gets ready for the grandma pageant. It’s a talent contest and she wants to do a belly dance. She has many outfits to choose from for her performance. Marina feels that once you are in your 50’s you do not wear revealing clothing. She says that Eva is embarrassing the whole family.

Diana gets advice from her friend Anastasia about her boyfriend situation. Her parents want her to be with a successful Russian man. Diana is 23 and wants to have a baby by the time she is 25 so she can be a “hot mama.” Diana, who is very beautiful, says she likes plastic surgery and botox. Diana’s parents are strict and very traditional. Anastasia doesn’t think she should tell her parents about Paul.

Back to Marina! She is still concerned about Eva embarrassing her at the pageant. The we hear Eva’s point of view. Eva is a 56 year old grandmother, who was once a Russian engineer. It was always her dream to be on stage and perform. She says she is so happy she has this opportunity to make her dream come true.

At Diana and Anastasia’s house, Diana’s mother drops in to pay a visit and help her make borsht. It looks like Diana doesn’t even know her way around her own kitchen. As her mom makes the borsht, she drops a few “hints” for Diana. A woman has to be “all,” a housekeeper and a cook. Diana asks how her mother would feel if she brought home a Spanish guy. Her mother has no clue Diana and Paul have been seeing each other a few times a week. Her mother says she would be upset. She tells her daughter that at 23, she needs to be thinking about her future. She wants to see her with a Russian man of the same culture…culture is very important. She tells her not to hurt her or the family.

Finally, the “Grandma Pageant!” Marina makes critical remarks the entire time. Eva does her belly dance and it was a real crowd pleaser. Marina is complaining that the pageant is too long and “it went on forever.” Her daughter is tired and cranky, so she leaves. Marina says, “It was horrible, 5 hours of torture.” But, Eva wins the contest for best talent and says it broke her heart that the family left. Marina says she would never go back again (to another pageant).

The episode ends with a dinner between Diana and Paul. They are eating tuna tartar, Paul hates it. She wants to talk to him about being Russian. She enjoys spending time with him, but asks if he thought there was a future for them down the road, like marriage. Paul says yes, he wouldn’t be going out with her otherwise. Then she bluntly says she can’t be with him because he isn’t Russian. Her family wants her to be with a Russian man. She breaks up with him, says she feels bad and that’s the way the cookie crumbles, but she has to be with a Russian man.

Now for my two cents! The short review is “Oy Vey!” If you are tired of reading, end here. This goes especially for Marina, who doesn’t like “long” things.

I hope that this episode is not a reflection of what is to come. Marina’s incessant complaining about the pageant and her disrespect of her mother-in-law was hard to listen too. Apparently she has learned nothing from her own culture about respecting parents. Eva is nothing to her??? Really? She made her opinion known at the very beginning of the show, was it necessary to keep it up the entire time? She wasn’t at all supportive of Eva, knowing full well that this was a dream of hers. Her husband, Michael, never once tells her to knock it off. Wasn’t the pageant held at their restaurant? Weren’t they making money from all who attended? Come on, give me a break. Her behavior was rude, disrespectful and obnoxious.

Anna doesn’t need to freeze her eggs just yet. She is young and 33 is still young enough to have children the old fashioned way. I know because that’s when I had mine. I have to agree with her comment that there are no decent guys out there. I felt the same way at her age. All guys seemed like immature jerks. My advice to her is not to think about guys as marriage material right now. Pursue your career and goals. If the right guy comes along, she will know it. Otherwise, she can focus on finding the right guy in eight years or so. If that doesn’t work, go to a sperm bank and be a successful single mother.

Diana, hmmmm, she knew full well that a Spanish guy was not going to be her family’s first choice for her as a husband. It’s part of the culture and ingrained in these women from birth. This is why they live in an ethnic community. They want to keep their culture and traditions preserved. Diana knows this, so what’s up with Paul? In my opinion, I think the show went out and got her a “Spanish boyfriend” actor just so they could make a point of addressing this issue. I think this was a little too scripted. The Russians, at least on this show, want their children to marry Russians, period end of story. We all know that; Diana should have known that. The way she breaks up with her boyfriend is cruel and thoughtless. She is dismissive. “Oh well, that’s the way the cookie crumbles.” Really Diana? Do you expect guys to line up to take you out knowing at any time you might announce their unsuitableness; maybe they aren’t Russian or Russian enough, maybe they don’t make enough money, maybe they aren’t good looking enough? Where do you draw the line? When does a person’s character count for something?

I have to end with Marina and Eva. Marina seems very selfish and self centered. This pageant is all about her and how embarrassed she is going to be of Eva. She already acts like the “diva” of the cast, but she has a very long, long way to go to be considered a “diva” in the entertainment field. Having an attitude, jewelry and designer clothes does not make you a diva, it makes you a diva “wanna be” at best. Diva’s have some kind of talent to bring to the table. I saw no talent in this episode, at least not from Marina.

Eva is another story. She is very likable. Her reason for doing the show she says is to show other, older, divorced women that they can still follow their dreams. Their lives aren’t over. Find something you are passionate about and pursue it. That is the message that Eva sent and it was well received by me. I am glad she won her pageant and I am looking forward to seeing more of Eva. The most touching moment of last night was, after the pageant, when Eva said that it broke her heart that her family left. Eva, all I can say to you is, don’t let Marina break your spirit! You keep pursuing your dreams!

Finally, the cast members all consider themselves reality show stars already. But I want to question another “star,” why was the “star of David” not mentioned? By that I mean, we are only getting part of the picture, the Russian part. The reality is that many, if not all, these cast members are Jewish. This is still a reality show, is it not? Did that piece of reality slip someone’s mind? Don’t you think we should know that? Are they trying to send a message that the Jewish element is irrelevant? I’d love an explanation for that.

What did you think of the show? We'd love to know!

Russian Dolls: Eva Levitis-- Pageant Grandma!

In tonight's premiere episode of Russian Dolls, we'll see Eva Levitis compete in a beauty pageant for grandmothers. She's a woman of many talents: she auditioned for the American X Factor back in June and recorded a song earlier this month. But for the talent part of the beauty pageant, she showed off a different skill... belly dancing!

Eva took up belly dancing when she and her husband got divorced. We'll also see Eva on dates later in the season. She hopes to show women her age that even though being single later in life can be scary, it can be a lot of fun too! I think that's a great message, and I look forward to seeing more from her on the show tonight.

For more information about Eva's life, check out this great article from The New York Times: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/11/a-russian-matriarch-gets-her-moment-onstage/

Russian Dolls: Michael Levitis Gets Probation

Michael Levitis leaving court.

After some shady dealings in trying to bribe State Senator Carl Kruger and lying to the FBI about it, Rasputin owner, Michael Levitis was sentenced to three years probation and fined $15,000.

Levitis was allegedly acting as a “go between” between business owners and Kruger over some help in an official business inspection. Kruger faces several corruption charges himself in a large bribery scheme that may end his political career and land him in prison. The sentencing of Levitis comes one week before the premiere of Russian Dolls, dubbed Bighton Beach’s Jersey Shore with Russians. Michael and his wife, Marina, and mother, Eva, will be featured on the show.

One of the most criticized scenes has nothing to do with sex and drinking, but with Marina treatment of her mother-in-law, who enters a talent contest for grandmothers. She is quoted as saying “Stupid thing went on forever” and It was never-ending torture.” Eva, who is 56, wins first prize at the talent contest, but her family walks out on her.

Russian Dolls premieres next Thursday, August 11th at 10:30 PM ET.

Russian Dolls: Eva Levitis, The Fortune Teller

One of the minor cast members in Lifetime’s Russian Dolls is Eva Levitis, mother of Michael Levitis. Aside from being related to Michael and Marina, Eva is also a professed, second generation “fortune teller.” In Eva’s website is the story of how her mother, Faina, became a medium.

Faina worked on a ship and one day, during one of the stops, she started speaking to a woman who was selling tickets. The woman suddenly asks Faina if she ever had any kind of premonitions. Surprised by the question, because it was true, she starts talking with the woman who confides in her that she is a medium and feels Faina could be one too. Faina went to see the woman each time her ship stopped at that village, so the woman could teach her what she knew. But, the woman quickly saw that Eva’s mother had great accuracy in telling the future from cards. Faina went back to Moscow and started doing readings for people in secret, because it was forbidden at the time. And, when Eva was old enough, Faina taught her daughter everything she knew. Eva still uses her mother’s cards to tell the future.
